Primary School Counselor

Full-Time / Part-Time, Permanent

The School counselor will design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They will lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. The Counselor will work towards a healthy working environment and be ready to mediate, advise and guide the students, parents and staff during complex times and challenges.

General Duties

  • Work closely with the Learning Support team to build a positive, respectful, collaborative campus environment
  • Value and respond to the diversity and individual differences of students
  • Ensure equitable access to opportunities and to the curriculum for all students
  • Build bias-free relationships with students, colleagues and the community based on trust and respect
  • Support a strengths-based approach to growth and development
  • Listen to and advise on  student concerns regarding academic, emotional or social problems
  • Help students plan social and emotional or academic goals with clear action points
  • Mediate any conflicts that may arise
  • Work with the Director of Community & Partnerships to strengthen relationships with parents, caregivers and the community
  • Support open lines of communication between all key stakeholders
  • Collaborate and consult with parents, teachers, community organizations and other stakeholders
  • Foster relationships with other professionals in the community and refer students and parents to external support services as needed

Specific Duties

  • Co-plan and co-teach Campfire to support social / emotional growth
  • Work closely with the Learning Support team to conduct observations, analyze student behavior and develop individualized support plans
  • Plan and deliver small group and one-on-one intervention for students
  • Develop a peer counseling program
  • Conduct workshops for parents, caregivers, the community  and staff
  • Develop relationships with external agencies for student support services
  • Communicate regularly with external agencies to inform individualized support plans (where appropriate)
  • Develop and maintain communication protocols / procedures amongst all key stakeholders
  • Work closely with the Learning Support team to complete reports on student progress
  • Gather and analyze data to measure progress
  • Review and interpret reports and student records

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in providing student services in a primary school setting
  • M.A. in Counselling, or similar field
  • Working knowledge of various counseling models, practices and resources
  • Positive, proactive and independent work ethic
  • Integrity, professionalism, advocacy skills, engaging interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills
  • Sound judgement, emotional intelligence and advocacy skills
  • Native fluency in English
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
